The Story

"I woke up to see a skinny little imp skipping around the room, twirling his tail and dancing and making rude gestures. He was so comical I laughed out loud and he turned in a flash. 'Oho!' he said. 'You don't belong here!' And he jumped right at my face, grinning."

After her father's death and her mother's remarriage, Sarah is sent to work as maidservant to the most famous woman in Norwich, the holy Lady Julian, an anchoress locked away for life in one tiny stone cell. Heartsick and homesick, Sarah misses the family gatherings and her pet cat, Tib. She's jealous of her little sister, who's still at home. She feels unwanted, unloved. Then one day she smashes a basket of eggs - and Lady Julian wants to speak to her.
